How to Tell If Your Dog Is Overweight: Simple At-Home Checks

It's easy for humans to pack on extra pounds, and unfortunately, our dogs face the same risk. A sedentary lifestyle and weather that keeps them indoors can lead to weight gain. Chronic obesity heightens the chances of joint disease, respiratory issues, pancreatitis, diabetes, skin problems, cancers, and heart conditions. Wondering if your dog is overweight?

Looks alone won't tell the full story. Place your hands on your dog's sides to feel the ribs, shoulders, hips, and spine. This is key for dogs with thick, fluffy coats that conceal their body shape. The rib check is the gold standard: You should feel the ribs with light pressure—no digging required. From the side, spot a defined waist; from above, an hourglass silhouette.

Run through these checks:
Can you feel your dog's ribs easily?
Can you feel the top of your dog's shoulder blades?
Can you see your dog's last rib?
Can you feel your dog's spine but not see it?
Can you feel your dog's hips but not see them?
Does your dog have an hourglass figure?
Does your dog have a waist when looking at the side view?

If you answered "no" to more than one question, your dog likely needs to lose weight.
