How to Hold a Dog Leash Properly for Safe, Controlled Walks

Walking your dog should be a pleasant experience, but many owners end up being dragged along by an excited pup. Holding the leash incorrectly—like wrapping it around your hand—can cause hand or wrist injuries. As experienced dog trainers know, proper leash grip promotes safety, better control, and teaches your dog polite walking manners.

Mastering the Basic Leash Grip:
Slide your thumb through the leash handle loop, then close your fist. For calm dogs on longer leashes, this simple hold is all you need.

To keep your dog closer, fold the leash into your hand until you reach the desired length. A retractable leash works well here too. For overexcited or potentially aggressive dogs, opt for a shorter leash to maintain firm control.

For optimal control and safety, ensure the leash exits from the bottom of your fist (near your pinky finger) after folding.

When pausing to chat or let your dog rest, step on the leash with one foot or clasp both hands together like gripping a baseball bat, pressing it against your belly button to prevent forward lunges.

If your dog pulls hard, stand with feet shoulder-width apart and pivot one hip toward the pull direction. This often stops the pulling instantly.

To release more leash, simply open and close your fist while keeping your thumb securely in the loop—maintaining balance effortlessly.
