Dogs Exhibit Episodic-Like Memory: They Recall Your Actions Even Unexpectedly

Humans excel at recalling past events, even insignificant ones. New research reveals dogs possess similar "episodic memory," remembering complex human actions without anticipating a test.

In this study, researchers employed the "Do as I Do" training method. Dogs learn to observe a human action and replicate it upon the "Do it!" command—for instance, jumping if the owner jumps.

Seven dogs were first trained in imitation via "Do as I Do." They then underwent a new phase: lying down after any human demonstration. Unexpectedly, when researchers issued "Do it!", the dogs performed the original actions, demonstrating episodic-like memory despite no incentive to retain them.

Performance held after 1-minute and 1-hour delays, though accuracy declined slightly over time. Dog owners: your pets are remarkably observant and retain these moments.
