Approximately 18% of Dutch households own a dog, totaling 1.5 million dogs nationwide. More than half (54%) live in one-person (22%) or two-person (32%) households. Dog owners tend to be older, with 80% over 40 and the largest group (23%) aged 55-64. Ownership is lowest in major cities and the north (both 11%), highest in the south (29%), followed by the west (27%) and east (22%). These findings emerge from Tinki.nl's comprehensive 'Who is the Boss?' study.
The stereotype that cat and dog lovers don't mix is debunked: 29% of dog owners also have cats. Education and income levels show no significant correlation with dog ownership, per the research.
