New Study Reveals Striking Similarities Between Dog and Human Gut Microbiomes

Recent research shows that the gut microbiomes of dogs and humans share more similar genes and dietary responses than previously realized. Scientists analyzed the microbiomes of two dog breeds and discovered striking parallels with human microbiomes—far closer than those of pigs or mice. These findings highlight just how much we have in common with our canine companions.

Dietary shifts in protein and carbohydrates triggered comparable changes in the microbiomes of dogs and humans, irrespective of dog breed or sex. Notably, microbiomes in overweight or obese dogs responded more robustly to high-protein diets than those in lean dogs, underscoring the resilience of healthier microbial communities.
