A recent study reveals that growing up with a pet offers profound social, emotional, and educational benefits for children and adolescents. Young people with pets show greater self-confidence, reduced loneliness, and enhanced social skills—evidence that strongly supports pets' role in nurturing healthy child development.
“The influence of companion animals on self-esteem peaks during key stages: for children under 6 and adolescents over 10,” notes the lead author. “Dogs and cats excel as sources of social support, thanks to their engaging interactions compared to other pets. In both Western and non-Western cultures, pets provide psychological comfort, boost well-being, and cultivate a positive self-image.”
