According to a GfK survey of 27,000 respondents across 22 countries, 54% of Dutch people own a pet. Cats (26%) and dogs (25%) are the most popular, followed by fish (11%), birds (7%), and other pets (8%). Women are more likely than men to own dogs or cats. Argentina and Mexico lead globally with 80% pet ownership, while South Korea has the fewest at 31%.
In the Netherlands, women outpace men in dog ownership (27% vs. 23%) and cat ownership (28% vs. 23%). Men prefer fish (13% vs. 9%), birds are similar (6% men vs. 7% women), and more women have other pets (11% vs. 6%).
Globally, over half the population owns at least one pet. Dogs top the list (33%), followed by cats (23%) and fish (12%). Cats reign in Russia, France, and the US; dogs in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico; fish in China; birds in Turkey. South America leads with Argentina and Mexico at 80%, Brazil at 75%. Asia lags: South Korea (31%), Hong Kong (35%), Japan (37%).
