How do you contribute to fewer stray cats?

Chipping and registration, castration, planning. There is a lot that a responsible cat owner should know. There are many stray cats in the Netherlands, and one of the reasons is that unfortunately some cat owners do not take responsibility. When purchasing a cat, it is very important to consider whether you have the time, advice and commitment to own a pet for years to come. We also recommend that you adopt a cat from a shelter, as there are far too many cats that do not have a safe home. How do you contribute to fewer stray cats!

1. Have your cat neutered

To avoid unwanted kittens with your cat or someone else's, it is important that you have your cat neutered. This applies to both women and men. A large proportion of all homeless cats are the result of an unwanted litter. Neutering is a simple procedure that allows your cat to come home the same day.

2. Chip and register your cat

Chipping and registration is not a legal requirement these days, but an issue that animal welfare organizations are passionate about. If your cat runs away, if it's chipped and registered, you're significantly more likely to get it back. A common misconception is that it is enough to identify the cat. Chipping is done at a vet, either through a chip in the neck skin, or a tattoo in the ear. Each cat is given a unique number, which must then be registered.

3. Contribute to the shelter of cats

There are many cat shelters that care for homeless cats. Cat houses are usually run voluntarily by enthusiasts and depend on grants and support to be able to move around. Could you help me? Find a cat house near you and see how you can help them with their work.

4. Adopt a cat from a cat shelter

Is your cat in a cat shelter? There are many foundations in the Netherlands that fight to give homeless cats a second chance. There are kittens, young cats and older cats. When you adopt a homeless cat, you both get a friend for life and you create space for a new kitten in the shelter. A cat from a shelter is dewormed, vaccinated, chipped and delivered with a heart full of love.
